Take the Next Step in Home Design and Planning

Where will you live next? Should you stay or should you go? One of the biggest issues people confront as they move toward retirement is where to live.

Should you remodel or renovate your home? Life transitions often create opportunities to enhance your home – empty nest, job changes, marriage, retirement – and all of these changes offer a chance to think about whether there's an optimal fit between your home and your lifestyle.

Beth Tracton-Bishop, Ph.D, Gerontologist with The Hartford Advance 50 Team, explains the S.T.E.P. action plan for enhancing the match between your housing and your lifestyle.

In conjunction with the MIT AgeLab, The Hartford's Advance 50 Team of aging experts conducted research with people across the country and interviewed housing experts.

Based on the research, a four-step action plan was developed. Use "The Next Step" plan to help you: assess your current living situation, think about how and where you want to live, clarify your priorities and goals, talk with the important people in your life about these decisions, explore design ideas, and get the help you need.

The Next Step

Consider this "STEP" approach to help match your housing and your lifestyle.

  • Survey: Assess the fit between your home and your lifestyle.   More
  • Think: Decide how and where you want to live.   More
  • Explore: Consider universal design options.   More
  • Plan: Create an action plan to achieve your goals.   More
