Fire Safety Education For Kids

Teaching Kids Fire Safety

Providing fire safety education to children is something that The Hartford is committed to. Whether you're a parent or a teacher, making time to educate children about fire safety issues is a very important responsibility for every adult. The Hartford's Junior Fire Marshal program is designed to help you begin to talk about - and teach - fire safety to your kids and family.

The Hartford’s Junior Fire Marshal Program

The Hartford has helped families remain safe and secure for 200 years. The importance of fire safety for kids came into the spotlight in 1947 when The Hartford Junior Fire Marshal® program was introduced. Since then we have helped teach children's fire safety lessons to 110 million kids and deputized them as junior fire marshals. Our signature red fire helmets have been proudly worn by generations of children who have learned the basics of fire safety through our innovative educational program.

Fire Safety Education Basics

The Junior Fire Marshal program offers free materials that we encourage you to share with your children. No household is free from the dangers of fire – but households can be prepared. Our Junior Fire Marshal materials are designed to:

  • Teach children lifesaving lessons such as stop, drop, and roll; go low in smoke; draw a home fire escape plan and more through fun, engaging and educational activities.
  • Give kids an awareness of their personal safety and the actions they can take to help protect themselves, their family, and friends.
  • Allow you to have meaningful and vital fire safety conversations with your children.

Fire Safety Education for the Whole Family

Sometimes, grown-ups could use a refresher course on fire safety education as well. For starters, take a walk through your home, using our handy fire safety inspection sheet as a guide. This activity is one your entire family can partake in. Inspect each area of your home to make sure no fire hazards exist.
